Getting to know… Sam Smith

Getting to know… Sam Smith

Earlier this year, we were delighted to welcome Sam Smith as a fund accountant. Based in our Cardiff office, Sam is responsible for preparing consolidated accounts and investor reporting. Find out a little more about him here.

What attracted you most to joining WestBridge?

The culture and team ethos. Accountancy and finance can be a difficult career when it comes to the working environment, but WestBridge have a strong emphasis on teamwork and collaboration, whilst maintaining a clear drive and ambition for further success. This struck a chord with me. Additionally, the prospect of facing new challenges and pushing the boundaries of my capabilities was highly motivating. WestBridge’s exceptional reputation for providing employees with opportunities to stretch themselves and take on meaningful challenges was something that excited me. I thrive in environments where I'm constantly learning and evolving, and I believe that the challenges presented will allow me to do just that.

How did your career bring you to private equity?

Previously I was an audit and accounts manager in an accountancy practice. During my time in this role, I gained invaluable experience in scrutinising financial statements, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements, and insights to enhance financial performance. However, as I progressed in my career, I worked alongside private equity backed clients and I found myself increasingly intrigued by the world of private equity and the strategic decision-making processes that underpin it. This curiosity led me to explore opportunities in fund accounting, where I could leverage my expertise in financial reporting.

What do you find most rewarding about your role at WestBridge?

The most rewarding part of my role lies in fostering a cohesive team environment and vibrant company culture. Working with colleagues who share a passion creates a sense of camaraderie and mutual support which enhances the enjoyment of the day-to-day work. Every day there is a different challenge which keeps the job interesting and exciting as well as further developing my financial analytical and strategic decision-making skills.

Don’t shy away from challenging assignments or projects. Embracing new challenges allows you to stretch your capabilities, gain valuable experience, and demonstrate your ability to handle complex tasks.

What does life look like when you leave the office?

Living in South Wales, I am blessed with fantastic scenery with the Brecon Beacons and beautiful beaches on my doorstep. I frequently immerse myself in the outdoors through pursuits such as hiking and mountain biking. I am also an avid rugby fan and try to attend Six Nations games every year (despite Wales’ recent performances…).
